This was a Second World War aviation fuel depot built by the RAF in 1942 with 6 buried C 2 storage tanks holding 29,000 tons of fuel. The tanks were demolished around 2013-14.
<3> Various, Written Communication to the HER, Sharp K, 09/08/2013 (Written Communication). SCH3756.
The ten tanks on this site were constructed in 1943 and comprise of concrete sides with a steel lining and floor, the roof is concrete and is supported by steel columns; depending on the location on the site, the top of the tank is buried under clay between about 2m and 4m thick. The Ellesmere Port/Backford – Berwick Wood/Avonmouth pipeline (previously part of the PLUTO pipeline) runs to the rear of the depot. The depot was isolated from the pipeline when the site was decommissioned in 1975. The tanks have been breached from the sides, the roof removed and the steel tank linings salvaged. The remaining concrete structures have been infilled with the spoil.
