Summary
Documentary sources refer to the village having '4 fougasse road batteries covering approaches to Audlem.' Also that 4 Platoon of D Company, No 24Bn (Nantwich) Cheshire HG possessed in 1941, Northover projectors, Tommy Guns and 'spigot mortars on the way.' The village lies on the Shropshire union canal stop line which was Western Command Stop Line Number 8, which was a line of defences that would hold up enemy forces in the event of an invasion, and allow the armed forces to move around behind the line and concentrate forces on the enemy. Villages were sometimes incorporated into Stop Lines and turned into Defended Localities. These were heavily defended areas in and around the settlement designed to cause problems for any enemy forces trying to get around them.
