Monument record 4081/0/2 - Road Block at Ledsham

Please read our .

Summary

With referance to the anti-tank gun emplacement at SJ358767 (4081/0/1); the photograph shows the inside wall above the gun, on which a small plan is just perceptible showing the site of a roadblock which the gun covered. On the plan there were two buildings on either side of the road, the railway parapet and concrete anti-tank cylinders/tank traps. Tank traps were designed to stop tanks, or to expose their vulnerable undersides; or in this case they could be part of a road block, with the ability to hold rails or barbed wire. Roadblocks in general were usually a combination of moveable and stationary objects, either on or built into roads and bridges, that could be used to stop or divert any enemy vehicles. The bridge is on an old section of the A550(T) road crossing the railway line.
