Monument record 4080 - Road Block at Lyme Green
Please read our guidance about the use of Cheshire Historic Environment Record data.
Summary
This is the site of a road block (now destroyed) that comprised of concrete sockets to take vertical rails, and the rails themselves. Roadblocks were usually a combination of moveable and stationary objects, either on or built into roads and bridges, that could be used to stop or divert any enemy vehicles. They often incorporated steel bars, concrete blocks and barbed wire. The site was on a canal bridge crossing the Macclesfield canal. It was part of the Western Command Stop Line Number 6, which was a line of defences that would hold up enemy forces in the event of an invasion, and allow the armed forces to move around behind the line and concentrate forces on the enemy.
