Monument record 4076 - Concrete block at Macclesfield Canal
Please read our guidance about the use of Cheshire Historic Environment Record data.
Summary
This site contains a large concrete Tank trap and two narrow gauge railway tracks, on bridge 23. There were many types of Tank Traps but by far the most durable are the large concrete blocks like these. Many have survived long after the war. These were used to create a road block on the bridge over the Macclesfield canal, with the rails slotting into either slots in the bridge or the block, and either vertical or horizontal. However the bridge is too overgrown to be sure as to how the rails slotted in.. Roadblocks were usually a combination of moveable and stationary objects, either on or built into roads and bridges, that could be used to stop or divert any enemy vehicles. This was part of the Western Command Stop Line Number 6, which was a line of defences that would hold up enemy forces in the event of an invasion, and allow the armed forces to move around behind the line and concentrate forces on the enemy.
