Monument record 4074 - Concrete Block at Hurdsfield
Please read our guidance about the use of Cheshire Historic Environment Record data.
Summary
This site contains a large concrete cube shaped Tank Trap and a vertical steel rail which would probably have slotted into the concrete cube. There were many types of Tank Traps but by far the most durable are the large concrete blocks like these, in fact many have survived long after the war. This one was used to create a road block on the bridge over the Macclesfield canal. Roadblocks were usually a combination of moveable and stationary objects, either on or built into roads and bridges, that could be used to stop or divert any enemy vehicles. They often incorporated steel bars, concrete blocks and barbed wire. Also the parapet of the bridge was removed during the war.
