Summary

This is a type 24 pillbox at Hugbridge Farm. Type 24 pillboxes were squat heavily constructed concrete buildings. They were irregular hexagons in shape with the back side being the longest and containing the door and an embrasure either side of it. The other sides all had an embrasure, which were small rectangular openings in walls used to allow soldiers defended in the pillbox to shoot out at, or observe the enemy. This pillbox has brick shuttering, smooth narrow embrasures and the rifle shelves are intact. It also has one embrasure that is angled to fire down into the valley (North East). The pillbox is on a small hill overlooking two bridges and a small river, with a steep slope to the south. It probably defends the approach from the West. It is part of the Western Command Stop Line No 6, which is a line across the country controlled by Western Command in Chester. In the event of an invasion a Stop Line would hold up enemy forces, and allow the armed forces to move around behind the line, and concentrate forces on the enemy.
