Building record 4079/1/3 - Pillbox by Mannings Lane

Summary

A possible type 26 pillbox or machine gun emplacement by Mannings Lane. This structure has a square 6 inch/150mm thick concrete roof on brick pillars with traces of the dark green camouflage paint. It has a very low profile and seems to have open sides, rather than embrasures (small rectangular openings in walls that allowed soldiers in the pillbox to shoot at, or observe, the enemy). It has an internal anti-ricochet wall, presumably as protection for the rear of the structure. It faces North East, probably housed forward artillery observers or light weaponry and was part of the City of Chester defences. It was built during World War Two, a time when most other pillboxes around Britain were constructed.

This may not be a type 26 pillbox. It has a very low profile and seems to have open sides, rather than embrasures. It shares the low profile and open sided characteristics with five other similar structures located to the south and east of Chester.

This structure has a marked similarity to type 6n, open topped pillboxes, known from RAF Woodford (CHER 4058/0/0), the coast north of Liverpool and Dover.
