Monument record 4061 - Pillbox at Macclesfield Canal
Please read our guidance about the use of Cheshire Historic Environment Record data.
Summary
This is the site of a concrete roofed pillbox (now destroyed) by the Macclesfield Canal, in angle of A523 and a bridge over the canal. Pillboxes are small squat buildings with thick concrete walls, embrasures and usually a flat roof. The embrasures were openings in the walls that allowed the soldiers defended within to observe, or fire out at, enemy forces. They were designed as defensive structures, accommodating a variety of firearms ranging from rifles to anti-tank guns. They were normally used to defend vulnerable or sensitive areas such as airfields and factories and were built in Britain during World War 2.
