Monument record 4060 - Pillbox in Sutton Lane Ends
Please read our guidance about the use of Cheshire Historic Environment Record data.
Summary
This is a type 24 pillbox overlooking the Macclesfield canal. Type 24 pillboxes were squat heavily constructed concrete buildings. They were irregular hexagons in shape with the back side being the longest and containing the door and an embrasure either side of it. The other sides all had an embrasure, which were small rectangular openings in walls used to allow soldiers defended in the pillbox to shoot out at, or observe the enemy. The embrasures in this pillbox are stepped to allow greater firing angles without widening the opening. The pillbox is on the west bank of the canal and faces east, and covers a small bridge over the canal, which is about 10 meters away. It is also situated by a railway, which is to the rear of the pillbox.
