Monument record 4057 - Concrete blocks in Tiverton
Please read our guidance about the use of Cheshire Historic Environment Record data.
Summary
A number of large cylindrical concrete World War Two Tank Traps, which were designed to stop tanks or expose their vulnerable undersides. They are in the grounds of a Café in Tiverton on the A49 but are probably not in their original positions. They are near the canal and the railway embankment, and many tank traps were put in strategic places such as on bridges or by canals and railways to block the routes of potential invading forces. There were many types of Tank Traps but by far the most durable are the large concrete blocks like these, in fact many have survived long after the war. They are so durable that they are often moved, to line car parks for example, rather than going through the trouble of destroying them.
