Monument record 1446/29 - Gate posts with carved face

Please read our .

Summary

By the side of the track there is an earlier gateway into what may have been a field adjacent to the quarry, possibly pre-dating the woodland. There are two faced stone gate piers to the south end with crude cartoon of a man’s head with beret underwritten with the word ‘SAVE!’. Apparently this is a commonly used term and refers to Mussolini. The face probably dates to the 1940’s.

Full Description

By the side of the track, an earlier gateway into what may have been an earlier field adjacent to the quarry (pre-dating woodland?) two faced stone gate piers to the south end with crude cartoon of a man’s head with beret underwritten with the word ‘SAVE!’. Apparently this is a commonly used term and refers to Mussolini. The face probably dates to the 1940’s (1). An incised helmeted head supposedly in imitation of Mussolini and carved during the war with the word ‘SAVE!’ incised beneath the face on a gatepost (2).
There is also a strong possibility that this gate led to a track that went, through a short tunnel, into the quarry (pers. comm. Chris Carlon). The dressed pillars and short access from the quarry to the track would seem to bear this out (3).
