Full Description
The exact provenance of this head is unknown. It has large bulbous eyes and a simply executed incised slit mouth. It is of coarse stone (possibly millstone grit). The dimensions are 5.5 inches high, 4.5 inches wide and 3.5 inches deep, being smaller than life size. Found in a field wall with face facing into wall. No ears or hair depicted. Fairly worn, the features are indistinct. It is currently in private possession (1). It belongs to a large group of stone heads from Britain which on stylistic grounds are termed 'Celtic', but which show continuity into the Post Medieval period. The National Grid Reference given is centred to the civil parish of Macclesfield.
