Full Description
Head carved into sub-rectangular block of sandstone. Head carved in relief, detailed execution of lentoid eyes, moustache, beard and hair. Nose largely missing and font headed (hollow crown). It may have originated at nearby Old Holford Hall. It was apparently on a bridge until the First World War when workmen took it down, one of them taking it home. It was found in a garden in Plumley (1). It belongs to a large group of stone heads from Britain which on stylistic grounds are termed 'Celtic', but which show continuity into the Post Medieval period.
