Please read our .

Summary

A head carved into an almost rectangular block of sandstone. It is carved in relief and has detailed lentoid eyes, moustache, beard and hair, the nose is largely missing. It is font headed (because it has a hollow crown). It may have originated at nearby Old Holford Hall. It was apparently on a bridge until the First World War when workmen took it down, one of them taking it home where it was found in a garden in Plumley. It belongs to a large group of stone heads from Britain which on stylistic grounds are termed 'Celtic', but which show continuity into the Post Medieval period.
