Full Description
In Wilbraham Chapel of St. Mary the Virgin Church, Weaverham. A figure crudely and deeply incised on roughly shaped sandstone block with head, body and both arms outstretched displayed (may suggest a crucifixion scene). Suggestive of Romano-British Warrior gods from Maryport. Some damage but doesn’t seem to show lower part of figure. It is mounted in a corner of the church. Dug up from Churchyard in 1938. There are corbels with Celtic-style features on the outside of the church. There are two other stones at Weaverham Church that although crudely executed look like Burial stones like those at Iona (1). It belongs to a large group of stone heads from Britain which on stylistic grounds are termed 'Celtic', but which show continuity into the Post Medieval period.

GIS location at the wrong Weaverham church. Point moved from St Bedes Church to St Mary the Virgin
Probable that CHER 678/1/1 records the original position in the graveyard of this sculptured stone.
