Summary

A carved stone head found in a sandstone wall built 45 years ago in Willaston. It has sculpted eyes, nose and mouth in correct proportion for a human face and was identified by the Victoria and Albert Museum. It belongs to a large group of stone heads from Britain which on stylistic grounds are termed 'Celtic', but which show continuity into the Post Medieval period.

Full Description

Stone head found in a sandstone wall built 45 years ago in Willaston. Head with sculpted eyes, nose and mouth in correct proportion for a human face. Identified by the Victoria and Albert Museum as 17th/18th century (1). It belongs to a large group of stone heads from Britain which on stylistic grounds are termed 'Celtic', but which show continuity into the Post Medieval period.
