Full Description
Sandstone head 39cm high, 20cm wide and 15cm long, now owned privately. Traditional lentoid eyes, triangular nose, modelled nostrils and wide slit mouth. There is possibly a moustache but it is hard to discern. The head has a helmet and the face is demarcated by an incised line. The eyes look downward. As the helmet has a flat top it is most likely that this is a corbel feature and is most probably medieval in date. It belongs to a large group of stone heads from Britain which on stylistic grounds are termed 'Celtic', but which show continuity into the Post Medieval period. Possibility of three slides supplied by Norton Priory Museum (1).
The findspot for this artefact is unknown. The owner lives in Frodsham, hence the artefact is attributed to this parish (2).
