Summary

This head was found in the garden of a house on the Manchester Road, Tytherington. It measures 7 inches in height, which is smaller than average for a stone head. It has large eyes with heavy lids and pupils. The nose and mouth have been incised fairly simply and it appears to have a moustache. It was possibly free standing but due to its size is more likely to have been incorporated into a wall or building. It belongs to a large group of stone heads from Britain which on stylistic grounds are termed 'Celtic', but which show continuity into the Post Medieval period.
