Full Description
Brownhill's Bridge, Road Restriction Diamond. With the advent of heavy road vehicles, earlier bridges required protection with large cast-iron notices to show the safe bridge loading. They were put up in pairs and sighted on the right-hand (the driver’s) side. Local authorities have now taken many of them down as they are no longer required. This particular pair were situated 8 miles, 54 chains from the Marple Junction of the Macclesfield Canal at Poynton (erected by the Great Central Railway Company in 1896) but it is unclear whether they are still in-situ or whether they have been removed (1).
