Full Description

<1> 1998, Alderley Edge Landscape Project Archive, 163 (Unpublished Report). SCH4334.

The Topps mill pond: Outline of reservior indicated by elongate field and hollow, with possibly a second pond above it at [SJ]85097722. The 1787 map shows the lower mill pond at its full extent c.60-70 metres long, although by 1872 the pond was less than half this length, suggesting disuse of the mill and/or reduction in water inflow due to water usage and drainage diversion at the mine.

<2> Ordnance Survey, 1871-1882, Ordnance Survey County Series (Epoch 1) 25 inch to 1 mile - Cheshire, SJ8577, 1872 (Maps and Plans). SCH2462.

This map depicts a small heart shaped pond c.45 x 33m with a marshy area 40m x 25m to the immediate north-east

<3> See map for surveyor, c.1837-51, Cheshire Tithe Maps and Awards, EDT 179/3 1842 (Maps and Plans). SCH3266.

This map depicts a tear shaped pond. There is no mention of a mill or mill pond in the accompanying award.

<4> Bryant, A., 1831, Map of the County Palatine of Chester (Maps and Plans). SCH2114.

A pond is depicted at this location on this map.

<5> Environment Agency, 2003-2020, Environment Agency LiDAR Surveys, 1m DSM composite (14/06/2018) (Digital Archive). SCH7819.

<6> Various, Various, Oral communication to the HER, Edwards R, 14/06/2018 (Oral Communication). SCH2330.

Cursory examination of the composite LIDAR data (see 5) would seem to support the hypothesis for two, or maybe one large, millponds. There appears to be no evidence for surviving earthworks associated with the dams or leats.
