Summary

Hockenhull Hall. First mentioned 1347 as 'a certain Peele made by Richard de Hockenhull' which suggests a moated or stockaded site. Formerly manor house, now house & 2 flats. Late 17th century, remodelled c.1715 probably by Francis Smith for Hugh Wishaw of Chester. Brick with sandstone dressings. Hipped slate roof & stone-coped chimneys.

Full Description

Hockenhull Hall. First mentioned 1347 as 'a certain Peele made by Richard de Hockenhull' which suggests a moated or stockaded site (1). Formerly manor house, now house & 2 flats. Late C17, remodelled c.1715 prob by Francis Smith for Hugh Wishaw of Chester. Brick with sandstone dressings. Hipped slate roof & stone-coped chimneys. Square plan. 2- storey over basement, symmetrical 9-bay S front. Moulded plinth, Ionic pilasters to corners, projecting eaves. End bays project forward. Sash windows. Central bay has 5 semi- circular steps to doorcase with pilasters & pediment. 2-storey, 6- bay E front has plain facade within end pilasters. 2nd bay has stone gabled porch over access to basement. 2-storey, 3-bay W front has bands at 1st & 2nd floor. Left 3 bays show C17 fabric. Int: Entrance into large hall with saloon to left, passage & staircase to right. Saloon has fielded panelling. Open well oak staircase. Some rooms upstairs have C17 heavy chamfered beams. Full desc (2).
