Full Description
There is an earth circle/ mound near the summit of a hill partially removed by Church Quarry. The eastern rim of the earthwork (measuring approximately 20 metres in diameter) is the best preserved, the western side largely destroyed by quarry spoil disturbance from the upper rim of Church Quarry. The summit earthwork shows similarities with other earthworks of this type on the Edge and may well be prehistoric. It seems to be associated with two other larger encircling banks but these may be later additions. On the Roeder map of 1901, there is an earth circle marked (with a diameter of approximately 6 yards). One of the other encircling banks meets the steeper east facing slope of the hill below the summit circle but is cut by the north and east edges of the quarry. The bank has a weathered profile which suggests considerable antiquity. There appears to be no break in the surviving portion of the bank (1).
