Full Description
Marl pits at Brynlow Field. A pond and an associated dry hollow, most probably marl pits. The line of an old track (Cow Lane, SMR record 2939) appears to end at an access point into the easternmost pit, supporting the idea that these were used for the removal of clay. The pit is shown as a pond on maps in 1787, 1807 and 1872 although it’s changing shape suggests further exploitation. The pit also appears to be inline with a worked mineralised fault on its western side, which has led to speculation that it is an ancient opencast mine working although there is no evidence for this (1).
