Full Description
Old Alderley Quarry. This is the largest stone Quarry at the top of the Edge. It was already an established quarry in 1775 (the north end is shown on the 1775 map) and showing similar shape on the 1807 map to its current one, was probably exhausted by that date. It may have been worked from Medieval times but there is no evidence to support this. It boasts good examples of the 18th century Quarry Road entrance, incline access between two levels, an area of Stemple holes for a working platform staging or building, a quarryman's mark or monogram ('I' or 'J' also seen in Church Quarry) and other graffiti ('Copperplate' type) (1).
Curiously, the 1842 tithe map shows the original alignment of the road and the smaller-sized quarry.(2)
