Summary

Earthworks associated with the Finlow Hill mine workings. The workings follow a fault line and the earthworks represent open-cut workings, shafts and their encircling spoil mounds. These features possibly date from the early nineteenth century.

Finlow Hill Mine openwork and shafts. An opencut and shafts sunk around 1810 to 1820 over a ten to twenty metre stretch of the fault. Largely back filled and covered over. Following recent excavation there is access via a concrete cap and lid. The workings within are solely hand-cut from work with wedge and pick.

'...Opencut and, to the east, a shaft, belonging to Finlow (or Findlow) Hill Mine. This mine was reopened in two phases by the DCC, and consists of two roughly parallel veins with cross-cuts between them. The workings within are hand-cut, using a wedge and pick, and probably date from the cobalt mining era, c 1810, although the use of explosives cannot be excluded. Following excavation by the DCC, the opencut section of the mine was covered with concrete slabs. There is an access shaft towards the south end of the workings. Spoil heaps at this mine are small…'
