Full Description
Glaze Hill Adit. This is an old collapsed Adit with a large and fairly sharp profiled spoil tip, just below the footpath on the north side of the Stormy Point rock slide. It is most likely an X-cut adit driven to intersect faults below Stormy Point. An old Beech tree growing on the spoil tip has apparently genuine graffiti dating to 1888 ('...& Matilda 1888’) which along with the maturity of the tree suggests that the workings are Medieval to post-Medieval. The origin of the name is unknown but it implies an industrial function and is most likely due to the use of non-argentiferous lead ore in the production of lead glaze (sometimes known as 'Potters Ore’) which was fashionable in Medieval and early post-Medieval pottery (1).
