Summary

Chorlton Old Hall is Grade II* listed. IT dates to 1666 with later additions to the rear and alterations. It is built of red-brown brick with a slate roof in a T-plan. There are 4 bays with a projecting righthand bay with shaped gable. Inside a studded door with iron fittings has the inscription "In the time of Owen Clutton 1666 AC" above it. In the 19th century Chorlton Old Hall is recorded as a ruinous moated mansion,half-timbered and finished with gables. In 1917 there was no trace of a moat. The Ordnance Survey consider that the moat is a natural drainage channel which has been made wider and deeper to provide essential drainage for the house.The garden has been extended over it.

Full Description

Chorlton Old Hall,Chorlton Lane.House,1666 with additions to rear & alts.Red-brown brick,slate roof.T-plan.4bays with projecting righthand bay with shaped gable & smaller projecting entrance bay.Rectangular timber casements,mostly replaced chamfered stone plinth.1st floor dentillated band, brick parapet with stone coping at lefthand gable.Int:Studded door with iron fittings has inscription "In the time of Owen Clutton 1666 AC" above it.Stop chamfered beams.Inglenook.Close string stair has flat pierced balusters, moulded rail & square moulded newels,that at bottom bears Clutton arms.Full arch desc (1).Chorlton Old Hall is a ruinous moated mansion,half-timbered & finished with gables (2).In 1917 there was no trace of a moat (3).The OS consider that the moat is a natural drainage channel which has been made wider & deeper to provide essential drainage for the house.The garden has been extended over it.A vague hollow on W is prob of no significance (4).'Moat ' named on 1st, 2nd & 3rd edition OS maps.
