Summary

The remains of coal mining adjacent to Bakestonedale Road and brook. These remains include earthworks associated with shafts, spoil heaps and possible bell pits. There is also at least one capped adit.

Full Description

<1> Instone, E & Cranstone, D, 1994, Monuments Protection Programme Industrial Monuments Assessment: The Coal Industry Step 3 Report (Report). SCH4341.

This is identified as an area of adit workings and air shafts beside Harrop Brook. Along the valley only one capped shaft was positively identified, although small scale dispersed workings were visible over a wide area. There has been no case made for protection.

Post medieval coal mining is visible as shafts and associated mounds and an adit and spoil heap on vertical aerial photography. The earthworks remain extant on the latest 2010 aerial photography (see 3 & 4).
