Full Description

<1> Instone, E & Cranstone, D, 1994, Monuments Protection Programme Industrial Monuments Assessment: The Coal Industry Step 3 Report (Report). SCH4341.

Possible Powder Magazine at Lime Kiln Farm. Apart from the foundations of a small brick built building, nothing was positively identified on site. The surviving footings appear to be later in date than the 18th century and if this was a powder magazine, it is of low importance.

<2> Kirkham, L, 2004, Astbury Hydraulic Lime Works, Newbold, Cheshire, p.71 (Article in Journal). SCH7737.

The eighteenth century beehive powder magazine was located and consolidated.

<3> Unknown, Various, Mow Cop Interactive, Astbury Limeworks (Web Site). SCH7739.

A seventeenth century powder hut survives on the site.

<4> Various, Various, Oral communication to the HER, Edwards R, 11/11/2014 (Oral Communication). SCH2330.

It seems clear that the MPP surveyor failed to locate the structure.

With it being a small, low entrance and a rounded profile it looks more like a blasting shelter rather than a powder house – powder houses often have very robust walls and a light-ish roof so that the building remained (substantially) in-tact in the event of a blast.
