Monument record 1446/8/2 - Wood Mine Engine House, Crusher and Buddling Floors.

Summary

Wood Mine Engine House, Crusher and Buddling Floors. The brick foundations of the 1860's engine house remain partially buried under a bank. Between this and the Wood Mine Entrance are a series of spoil mounds, created from the unmineralised mining waste. On top of these a tram may have run bringing lead ore in to drop into the crusher (prior to the abandonment of this area of the site in 1864/5). A culverted channel brought the water supply into the buddling floor from holding cisterns in the higher levels of Wood Mine below the engine house. Six round Buddles are indicated on the 1872 map but they are now most probably buried (although some courses of brick which may have been the walls of the terracing between two from the rest are still visible).
