Summary

Several large limestone blocks and iron work were found and exposed near the base of the footpath leading to Whitebarn Farm during the 1997 excavations. No building is shown here on the 1870 or 1900 Ordnance Survey maps and the area was then covered by a sandhill. It seems likely therefore that the structure relates to the 1911 - 1919 phase of working. The footing may be part of an inspection pit or else for the foundations for machinery such as a flywheel.
