Full Description
Brynlow Field Opencast. Now a large irregular oval depression in the centre of Brynlow Field. The earliest known working is dated to the 1870's when it is known that miners in the area had depleted the ore bearing beds at depth. A number of shaft depressions can be seen around the site which probably relate to earlier 18th - 19th century working along the faults. 'Probationers' workings accessed from the Hough Level, rise to within 10 to 20 feet of the surface around the edges of the opencast (1).
Ore from the Opencast was fed down to trucks in the Hough Level through the shafts and levels surrounding the area including the Probationers’ Series on the north side and two ore chutes on the south side (one at Field Shaft) (2).
