Full Description
Devil's Grave. A bedding plane (or flat) mineral excavation, working the mineralised junction between a clay bed and the overlying conglomerate. Both natural and mined undercutting of this has led to some collapse both in the interior and on the exterior. The target of early miners may have been the easy to seperate azurite and malachite nodules within the clay which suggest some parts of the feature may be prehistoric. One prominent fault possibly carrying cobalt and other minerals has been worked at Devil's Grave of which the worked out piece forms the passage entrance to the mine. There is an iron-barred entrance which is topped by a non-local grit-stone lintel the date of its addition is unknown. Safety works have been carried out involving the addition of concrete pillers to hold up the roof. The origin of the Name is unknown as it conforms to no known local legend (1).
