Summary

Site of Bache Hall moated site. Seat of the Chauntrells for 9 generations then passed to the Whitby family in 1606. The building was later used as a garrison for Parliament and was destroyed during the siege of Chester. An angled area of water is depicted on the Tithe Map of c.1844-5 on the southern boundary of 'Moat Field'. Earthworks in the same location are depicted on OS first edition mapping and labelled 'Moat' (Remains of). The site is now covered by modern houses.

Site of Bache Hall. Seat of the Chauntrells for 9 generations, passed to the Whitby family in 1606. Webb in his section of King's 'Vale Royal', mentions the house as situated 'upon the confines ... of the City of Chester, a sweet & pleasant house & demain, called the Baits; but more vulgarly, the Bach, having been the seat of the Chauntrels'. The building was used as a garrison for Parliament & was destroyed during the siege of Chester (1643-6)

There is no trace of a moat. Site covered by modern houses.

An angled area of water is depicted on the tithe map the long axis of which forms the southern boundary of 'Moat Field'. The feature lies in Plot 2 with a Plot Name of 'Lawn', owned by Robert Broadhurst Hill and occupied by Henry Garnett. It lies to the east of Plot 1, 'Hall Buildings Gardens', owned and occupied by the same. The feature is also depicted as an earthwork on OS first edition mapping (source 5) and is labelled 'Moat (Remains of)'. On both the OS second and third edition maps (sources 6-7), the area is labelled 'Site of Moat', although no earthworks are depicted.
