Summary

Findspot of two roman brooches and silver coin. The brooches are copper alloy, one is a Trumpet type Bow brooch the other a Polden Hill type. Both incomplete and in poor condition. The coin is a "barbarous radiate" silver coin. The coinage of the late 3rd Century AD was very poor in quality, consisting largely of silver washed bronzes. Barbarous radiates are forgeries of the radiate, nominally worth two denari, indicated by the portrait of the emperor wearing a "radiate" crown, not a laurel wreath.

Full Description

Roman Trumpet type Bow Brooch. Made of copper alloy, the head and part of the bow is all that remains of the brooch. The waist bead continues around the back of the bow. The remains of a pierced lug is evident on the back of the head but the leg is missing. Incomplete and in poor condition. 40mm x 17mm (1).

Roman Polden Hill type Bow Brooch. Made of copper alloy, it appears to be plain. Typical oval mouldings to either side of the head continue as a swelling beneath it. The spring gear is intact with the chord held in place by a lug at the top of the head but the pin is missing as is the foot. The catch-plate is intact but very worn. Short semi-tubular wings with pierced lug terminals support the axis bar. 42mm x 15mm (1).

Roman Coin. Silver coin with Barbarous radiate. 15mm in diameter (1).
