Stone Axe. This artefect has been identified as a man-made stone axe although no direct comparisons have been made. The axe is so far, a unique find thought to be of Neolithic origin and of Eskdale granite. Its outline is a continuously curving leaf shape with a narrower butt end and a wide cutting edge. The axe has been chamfered on both faces to produce an edge all way round. There is an unusual surface colouration at the butt end of the axe which may be due to the pumping of dyes in to the the River Bollin from Macclesfield's silk mills during the past. The axe is significantly worn and the surfaces polished by the action of running water. The axe is belived to have been in the River Bollin for some time. The use of the axe is most probably of a ritual, ceremonial or display type, it would have been ineffectual as a chopping and cutting tool. 207mm long with a maximum width of 125mm and a maximum thickness of 47mm
