Full Description

Roman Brooch. Part of a bow of a bronze 'Head stud' type brooch. Head stud socket present with central rivet in-situ. Remains of catch-plate extend the length of the bow. The bow is decorated down each side with a row of blue enamel triangles. Sidewings and foot missing. Incomplete but in good condition. 30mm x 8mm (1).

The decoration ends in a stepped 'V', the rest of the bow being plain. The foot is missing and only remnants of the catch-plate are visible. The semi-cyclind wings terminate in perforated lugs which would have held the axis bar of the spring. The remainsof a hook or perforated lug on the top of the head would have held the chord. Oval appendices either side of the head. In good condition but incomplete. 42mm x 20mm (1).

Roman Brooch.Bow Brooch with damaged semi-oval head with traces of iron attatched to top curving, straight sided panel with double row of alternating enamel squares (only the yellow remains but finder reported seeing traces of red enamel on excavation which is now lost). Traces of a white metal coating (possibly silver or tin) over entire brooch. 45mm x 10.5mm (1).

Roman Brooch. Trumpet type brooch in a worn and corroded condition. Sub-circular head with remains of pierced rearward facing lug on back. Head turned very sharply back. Central 'button' without acanthus leaves but extends round the back of the bow. Bow and head have moulded decoration but it is too worn to describe. Rounded foot knob with double mouldings above. Only part of catch-plate remains. Traces of white metal coating on head and bow. 42mm x 12.5mm (1).

Roman brooch. Dolphin brooch with tapering bow. Rectangular panel of black and orange enamel at the crest of the bow. The hinged pin survives, secured by a pin which runs the length of the porjecting wings. Largely complete and in good condition. 39mm x 20mm (2).
