Monument record 2909 - Cropmarks at New Westage Farm

Please read our .

Summary

Cropmarks interpreted as two sub-rectangular enclosures, a circlular feature and what may be a trackway. Other aerial photographs show a complex of linear cropmarks, all of these correspond to field boundaries depicted on the 1841 tithe map. It is possible that a partial cropmark of the former field boundaries could have been interpreted as sub-square enclosures and a trackway. Cropmarks are visible changes in the growth of vegetation that may indicate a buried feature. These distinctions can usually only be identified from Aerial Photographs.

<2> Wessex Archaeology, 1996, Proposed pipeline to Winnington, Northwich (Cheshire): Environmental Statement - Archaeology and Heritage, W10 (Client Report). SCH4288.

A pair of subrectangular enclosures possibly associated with a circular feature and a trackway. Identified from aerial photographs during the South Trafford and North Cheshire Aerial Survey, but not identifiable on aerial photographs held at the NMR consulted during this project. Listed as either Prehistoric or Romano-British in the NMR (SJ67NE15).

<3> Various, Various, Oral communication to the HER, Edwards R, 12/10/2016 (Oral Communication). SCH2330.

Unable to trace the original aerial photograph on which the cropmarks were visible. The paper (1) makes general reference to aerial surveys undertaken by the Archaeology Department at Manchester University and vertical aerial photographs held by the former Cheshire County Council. An aerial photograph from the 1971-1973 Huntings Survey (4) shows a complex of linear cropmarks, however, all of these are former field boundaries depicted on the tithe map (5) and Ordnance Survey 1st edition map (6). It is possible that a partial cropmark of some of these features could have been interpreted as sub-square enclosures and a trackway.
