Full Description
<1> Various, Written Communication to the HER, Prag J, 2002. (Written Communication). SCH3756.
Two carved sandstone heads found in the front garden of a house in Macclesfield, probably Victorian in date. Belong to a large group of stone heads from Britain which on stylistic grounds are termed 'Celtic' but which show continuity in to the Post-Medieval period. These two are not particularly 'Celtic' in that they don’t have a triangular face or nose, the mouths are real and not gashes. Although the eyelids are rather heavy and pronounced, they are not the 'spectacle' eyes that are found on true Celtic heads.
