Full Description
Late Bronze Age socketed axe reported February 2000. Square sectioned and undecorated . Found in excess of 30cm deep in a clay deposit. 96mm long. 51mm length of wooden haft have survived in the socket (1). Wood identified by Jacqui Huntley of Durham University as apple/pear/hawthorn. Any or all of the species are likely to have been growing in southern Cheshire in the Bronze age. The generally even-grained nature of the wood makes the apple and pear a popular wood for turning and working (2).
