Full Description

The main Railway Station building, from circa 1900. Red brick in English Garden Wall Bond, with Accrington brick dressing and slate roof. Comprises two stories with seven bays. The platform arrangement is mirror image to of the northern line with the addition of a small mid slope stack. At the rear (east) a single storey projection with double door and three lage casements is under a cat slide roof. The windows in this section are seperated by bick reducing butresses. The north end of the lean-to is hipped with the cat slide roof of the return side brought down to low level. The two storey section has asymmetrically placed casements. The south gable end has a large four light casement with stone sill and semicircular arched head. Smaller windows in the gable have stone heads and sills. INTERIOR: A semicircular tunnel vault, of glazed bricks, links the wooden staircases which lead to the platforms. The ticket office is of wood flush panelled below and recessed pannels above. The entrance hall has a block wood floorand plastered ceiling with moulded beams supported on gallows brackets with curved braces (1).
