Summary

The main Railway Station building at Neston dates from around 1900. It is built in red brick with a slate roof. It comprises a single storey and basement, 3 windows and four doors. The doors on the platform side are under segmental arches.

Full Description

Railway Station building, from circa 1900. Red brick in English Garden Wall Bond, with Accrington brick dressing and slate roof. Comprises a single storey and basement, 3 windows and four doors. The doors on the platform side are under segmental arches. Doors framed, ledged and braced and windows flush casements. Flush stone sill band. Wide, boarded, eaves overhang with wall plate supported on ogee moulded wood corbels and shaped end brackets. Gable roof, with wide verge overhang on shaped purlins, has barge boards. Louvred ventilator astride south end of ridge with ogee lead covered cap and short ‘flag pole’ finial. At the rear (west) five semicircular or segmental arched openings give light to the basement. Gabeled door hood with barge boards supported on timber brackets and brick corbels. The door gives access to a staircase which links the platform with an underpass to the southern line. A chimney stack forms a batter where the south section of the building projects in front of the longer section, at this point the roof steps up. Asymmetrically placed casements under segmental brick arches. The south gable end has a further semicircular arched basement opening and casements with stone heads and sills. All corners and openings dressed in Accrington bricks. (1)
