Please read our .

Summary

Grade II listed farmhouse and part of a garden wall. The house dates to the early 17th century with extensions and restorations for the Tollemache Estate. The house is timber framed with brick nogging on a stone base. Inside it has a lobby entry plan which was later extended to long range. It has one storey and an attic. The exterior shows tall small framing with angle braces. Running forward from the righthand corner is a garden wall of tooled sandstone blocks containing a mounting block of five steps. Wood was in plentiful supply as a building material in Britain until the 17th century. It was therefore the most practical material for house building. Timber framed buildings consist of a wooden framework (usually oak) that was infilled to create solid walls. Infill material used included wattle and daub, lath and plaster, brick and weather board. Brick nogging, (brick infill) was often used in the 17th and 18th centuries to replace earlier wattle and daub or lath and plaster infill as it was longer lasting.
