Summary

Hatton Hall moated residence is surrounded by a complex of ancillary enclosures, devoted to a variety of functions that included service buildings, orchards, paddocks and recreation. The enclosure boundaries either follow the edges of earlier ridge & furrow furlongs or cut across them, so post-dating them. On E side is a rectangular enclosure, delimited by a shallow ditch 0.3m deep. Its N ditch starts from NE corner of moat and its S ditch runs along S side of moat and leads into SW corner. Ditch designed to hold water, as there is a poss dam or sluice on N side. Two poss further closes to the N and a long narrow enclosure to the S. To W of moat is a square enclosure 125m E-W x 135m N-S,enclosed by a ditch 0.4-0.5m deep, divided by an E-W angled ditch. To N of ditch is complex of scarps, poss site of farm buildings. To S of ditch is an access way leading into enclosure and sites of buildings
