Full Description
Romano-British brooch found in a field opposite Ness gardens in 1983. The head loop is broken and joins a rectangular head plate which is stepped at the front and flat on the back, and is decorated with two transverse panels of knurled decoration each defined at top and bottom by a transverse incised line, separated by a plain panel. The bow is flat at the front, convex at the back, and has a round boss set in a shallow raised pentagonal panel defined by incised lines. The upper bow has three panels to hold enamel; the two outer panels now contain alternate black rectangles, the other colour (possibly green from a trace left insitu) is missing. The lower bow is slightly ridged at the front with an incised line along either front edge. The foot appears to be incomplete and has two waisted mouldings, with a possible third. The pin is missing but it was hinged. Length 73mm. (2)
