Summary

Stone Boundary Marker standing on a bank that marks the boundary between the late medieval estates of the Stanley and De Trafford families and the parishes of Over Alderley and Nether Alderley. It is one of a group of stones locally referred to as the "merestones", and it is referred to in the perambulation of the boundaries on Alderley edge in May 1598. Excavations in 1997 located evidence for a timber revetment for the bank, with a socket located in between for the stone, which has fallen from its original position.

Full Description

A (c. 1.2m x 0.7m x 0.55m) boulder of Engine Vein conglomerate, located at Saddlebole on Alderley edge. It is located close to the crest of a bank (up to 0.7m high) which forms the boundary between the late medieval estates of the Stanley and De Trafford families and the parishes of Over Alderley and Nether Alderley.One of agroup of stones locally refeed to as the "merestones", it is refered to in the perambulation of the boundaries on Alderley edge in May 1598. Excavations in 1997 located evidence for atimber revettment for the bank, with a socket located in between for the stone, which has fallen from its original position. (1)
According to (2), this is a Mere Stone incorporated into a field bank boundary along the ridge of Saddlebole Hill, made of local conglomerate. On the top of the stone is a carved cross. It is also presumed to be mentioned in the 1598 perambulation of the boundaries.
