Summary

A series of trial excavations was carried out in 1981 in the car park of the shopping precinct and the playground of the demolished St. Thomas' School. No Romano-British features were revealed, but some sherds of Romano-British pottery and fragments of a clay tile were found in unstratified contexts, probably the products of local kilns. Small scale quarrying in the 19th century has disturbed the subsoil in this area.

Full Description

A series of trial excavations was carried out by Liverpool University Rescue Archaeology Unit in advance of building development in January 1981. Two areas were investigated: Area A (SJ61308627) was in the car park of the shopping precinct and the playground of the demolished St. Thomas' School, adjacent on the SW to the Church. No Romano-British features were revealed, but 3 (or possibly 5) sherds of Romano-British pottery and fragments of a clay tile were found in unstratified contexts, probably the products of local kilns. In several cases the subsoil had already been disturbed, probably by small-scale quarrying, which, in the 19th century had been partly responsible for the discovery of Romano British material in this locality. Ref 1 gives grid ref SJ 61308627, but plan shows site centred on SJ 6136 8624.
