<1> Gifford and Partners, 2001, Report on an Archaeological Evaluation at Millbank, Geenalls Avenue, Wilderspool, Warrington, R2384 (Client Report). SCH4069.

Evaluation at Millbank, Greenalls Avenue, Wilderspool, 2001. 7 trenches excavated between buildings. Trench 1 revealed evidence of a deposit of sandstone and cobbles which may represent the continuation of a side road recorded in excavations by Thomas May c. 1895-1904 (RN:435/1). Also a pit with 2nd C Roman pottery and tile, a sub-circular feature lined with sandstone and clay suggesting an oven. Also evidence of iron working waste and fired clay and other pits. Pottery consisted of locally produced orange and grey wares, with some samian and amphorae. Trenches 2 - 7 contained no archaeological remains, but suggest that the ground levels have been altered in the last 200 years. Evaluation suggested main potential for preservation along eastern side of site, adjacent to earlier excavations.
