Full Description

Evaluation 1991 of the Greenall Whitley Brewery Site, Wilderspool. 17 trial pits were excavated. Trial pit 4,immediately SW of the 'Roman' well, north of Greenalls Avenue, on a lawned area east of the boiler house, revealed evidence of a 19th C sandstone revetment wall, which was constructed along the line of the river bank. Up to 4 unbonded courses of sandstone blocks survived. A small area of cobbles abutted onto the south side of the wall, possibly representing 19th C road metalling along the line of Greenalls Avenue, which formed part of the Old Chester Road (1).
