Summary

An area west of the junction of the A523 with Street Lane was investigated for possible Roman activity, since both roads are thought to be of Roman origin. A bank about 1m high is visible in a field and is shown as a field boundary on the OS 2nd edition 6inch map of 1911. A rectangular pond, also shown on the map has since been backfilled. Geophysical survey indicated two linear features cutting through the bank and excavation has idenitifed a field boundary ditch of pre-19th century date.

Full Description

An area west of the junction of the A523 with Street Lane was investigated for possible Roman activity, since both roads are thought to be of Roman origin. A curvilinear bank, c.1m high is visible in the field running NW/SE. The feature is identifiable as a field boundary on the OS 2nd edition 6inch map of 1911. A rectangular pond, also shown on the map has since been backfilled. Geophysical survey indicated two linear anomolies cutting the bank which were investigated by trial trenches. The first trench produced no evidence of man-made features while the second revealed the cut of what was probably a field boundary ditch of pre-19th C date (1).
